Get Focused – How to Make More Without any extra effort!

Cameron’s busy – flat out busy – stupidly. So busy he’s had no time to change the way he does stuff or even think about changing the way he does stuff. You know the feeling, Getting up in the dark, getting home in the dark, working on the paperwork in the car while the kids are at footy practice. It can be exhausting. You’re making coin, sure but it seems the busier the business gets, the more you’re trapped.
A few weeks back, we started to build a business plan for next year. He was looking forward to it as he has some pretty big plans. Just yet, he didn’t realise how valuable they could be.
He works with a few key client builders. There’s a strong flow of work throughout the year. I suggested he find out what those guys were expecting or planning for the new financial year. “But I’ve never really done that before…” was his reply.
Me: “Just ask. Let’s find out.”
Him: “They’re never going to tell me, I just find out a month in advance when they know what they’re building, they won’t tell me what’s in their plan.”
ME: “Find out, and let’s see if you can save a bit with your suppliers and it’ll help you with your workflow.”
Cameron: “But I already get the trade prices…”
Me: “Yep – but lets just see.”
We all know there’s prices, discounts and bulk discounts, but we often get so caught up in our day to day, particularly when we’re as busy as Cameron, we can easily miss how much things have changed from when you last checked.
In Cameron’s case, it wasn’t that the suppliers were having a lend, they also just didn’t realise how much he’d grown.
A week goes by, and I get a call – “It was like pulling hen’s teeth.” he said.
Me: “Yeah, but what happened?”
Cameron: “Good news, I’ve saved some on every house.”
Me: “Much?”
Cameron: “Enough to pay for that tradie I just hired…”
Ever heard that expression, “When you’re up to your armpits in alligators, it’s easy to forget why you entered the swamp.” When you’re busy – really busy, it’s easy to just put your head down and to keep going. Sometimes we’re even a bit scared that if we look up we might lose momentum, but looking up can also help you see both what’s ahead and what we’ve actually achieved. It can create opportunities we didn’t notice are right in front of us.
When you know what’s coming, it’s worth more than you can imagine. There’s opportunity in that – For Cameron, that became money he could bank on. For other clients, it was a sea of new prospects they hadn’t noticed before…
